It’s official — today marks 40 years since the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and Super Mario Bros. made their U.S. debut on October 18, 1985!


That gray box and a pair of plumbers didn’t just launch a console — they launched an era. Back then, the gaming industry was still reeling from the 1983 crash, but Nintendo jumped in and saved the day, bringing joy, color, and creativity back to living rooms across America.

The NES introduced players to a whole new way to play — simple, intuitive, and instantly addictive. Its iconic D-Pad and two-button controller set the stage for every console that followed.
